Hi all, just added a bunch of neat old photographs to our shop. Some carte de visites, cabinet cards and tintypes. Actually these can make a neat collection if you concentrate and clothing styles or some of the props shown in the photos. Some neat Victorian furniture shows up now and then. Some collectors look for baby photos or old wedding pictures. Also tintypes of some interesting scenes can be found. Now and then someone is lucky enough to find a famous person like Abe Lincoln or some of the more famous indian chiefs. Many Civil War era cabinet cards and tintypes have been found by the more observent hunters. Images of antique autos are very popular collectibles.
And if you ever want to change your relatives go find some early photos and make an album of handpicked family members, who’s gonna know.

Carte de visites are usually approx. 2-1/2 x 4-1/8 inches in size. Cabinet cards measure approx. 4-1/4 x 6-1/2 inches. Tintypes come in many different sizes.

Collecting Kitchen Trivets

Got some small spots on the kitchen wall you don’t know what to do with? Trivets can fill up those spaces above the cabinets or around the windows etc. There are lots of different shapes, sizes and designs out there for your picking. most are made of cast iron but there are also a lot of brass trivets out there to. Maybe some nice antiques ones or newer ones depending on your wallet. Some of the antique trivets that were used to hold the old sad irons had advertising casted into the design. Then you had the more decorative types for resting pots or bowls of hot food on. You can usually spot the antique trivets by their castings and normally are a bit heavier the the newer ones. Somewhere in the 1970’s probably due to the Bicentennial there was a whole new flock of trivets being made. Now they are making them in China etc. The newer ones just don’t have the quality of the vintage trivets.

Many years ago well about 30, there was a luncheonette / restaurant near the Englishtown Flea Market that we use to go to after the market, they had hundreds of trivets on the walls, around the windows, over the doors and any other place they could fit them. Many of the trivets were given to them by the market dealers that ate there.

A few vintage kitchen trivets in the shop.

Collecting Advertising Ashtrays

Filed under: Collectibles — Tags: — countryjoe @ 3:32 pm

Advertising ashtrays are another sort of endless collection that you can get into. There are probably thousands of different advertising ashtrays out there. One could collect a single field like service stations, restaurants, hotels, motels, casinos, souvenirs from most anywhere etc. Or maybe just from your city or state. Or from different countries if your an armchair traveler.
Hey you can just collect by color or shape, whatever turns you on. There are no rules in this collecting game.

They were made in glass, china, pottery, plastic and many metals, copper, brass etc.
Also came in many different sizes and shapes. Many can be picked up for a few dollars and up. Check the yard sales, auctions, flea markets, antique shops and online. Many come in figural shapes also. Happy collecting.

Stop by the shop lots of neat collectibles added recently.
