Vintage Safety Razors
You guys want to collect something that you can also use? How about single or double edge safety razors. Hundreds of different safety razors have been made over the years. Safety razors were made in this country by Gillette, Gem, Schick, Valet, Enders andmany other companies. There were also many others made in other countries as well.
Over the years there were different models and improvements made. Gillette started in 1903. Gillette double edge blade razors started with a three piece razor which had a 2 piece blade holder with a screw on handle, they went on to a twist to open (TTO) type razor with trap doors in 1936. Then they invented an adjustable razor in the late 1950’s where you turned a dial on the handle which adjusted the blade angle. They also made a Techmatic in 1965 which used an injector blade similiar to Schick but only lasted a few years. Gem used a single edge blade with a flip top blade holder. There also was Valet which had it’s own style blade and a stropper setup to keep a nice edge on the blades. There were other companies over the years, but most didn’t survive. You can collect just the razors or try to collect them with original boxes and cases. Some of the neater antique razors came in nice tins with beautiful graphics You also have the smaller travel types. And for the women, lots of different ladies razors are available.

Razors don’t take up a lot of space, well not unless you let them. :-)

Collecting Mickey Mouse Stuff

Filed under: Collectibles — countryjoe @ 7:38 pm

Mickey Mouse was born in Walt Disney’s imagination early in 1928 on a train ride from New York to Los Angeles. Walt was returning with his wife from a business meeting at which his cartoon creation, Oswald the Rabbit, had been wrestled from him by his financial backers. Walt spent the return train ride conjuring up a little mouse in red velvet pants and named him “Mortimer,” but by the time the train screeched into the terminal station in Los Angeles, the new dream mouse had been rechristened. Walt’s wife, Lillian, thought the name “Mortimer” was too pompous and suggested “Mickey.” A star was born!

You could probably collect Mickeys forever, there have been hundreds, actually thousands of different items made over the years. Because of this you can set a price or size limit to what you collect and keep your sanity. Some earlier and rarer Mickeys are worth thousands of dollars but you could fill a room with under $25.00 ones. Have fun!

I collected Mickey stuff for lots of years and amassed hundreds of assorted pieces. A few years ago I sold off most of the collection but I am still finding small Mickeys in boxes, corners and hiding in other dark corners. As I run into them I will be adding them into the shop.

Collecting Graniteware

graniteware

Need to add some color to your kitchen or just want that country look? How about collecting or decorating with enamelware, also known as graniteware. American enameled items came to be called graniteware — a term that may have come from the popularity of Granite Iron Ware, produced in 1876 by the St. Louis Stamping Co. I personally call the grey enamelware, graniteware because of the look and the rest enamelware.

Most enamelware was made up until the 1950’s, but newer pieces were made during the 70’s and are still being made. The newer pieces are normally lighter in weight, made cheaper and don’t have that earlier look. Many vintage pieces will have chips and dings from daily use and that shouldn’t deter you from collecting them.

There were many types of kitchen and household items made. It was made in many colors and combinations. There were hundreds of different patterns made over the years. Some pieces are very affordable given their age and some can be very expensive due to scarcity. But the nice thing is that you can set a price range and pretty much make a nice collection within your budget

We have been buying and selling graniteware for many years and have had little items up to a large cooking pot that was about the size of half of a 55 gallon drum. There is a nice selection of interesting antique and vintage graniteware pieces in our shop. Many that are normally difficult to find. A few of these pieces are the more common, pots and pans, pie pans, colanders of all types (look great hanging on the wall), baking pans, funnels, cups, bowls, pottys, ladles, dippers and other utensils. A few harder to find muffin tins, chamber sticks, coffee pots, small buckets, cream cans, cake molds. Also rarer pieces like flasks, lunch buckets, oil bottles, blue - white swirl cuspidor / spitoon etc.

Stop and browse around the shop.

Collecting Salt and Pepper Shakers

Filed under: Collectibles — countryjoe @ 3:31 pm

Another small and neat item that you can collect are salt and pepper shakers. There are zillions of different sets out there. Salt and pepper shakers are made in about every shape and subject that you can think of. Oh and they are small and reasonably priced. The only problem is if you don’t have self control they have been known to take over complete houses. You can collect figural shakers of all types of animals, dogs, cats, birds, fish, people shaped, cars, cartoon characters, fruits and vegetables, household items like toasters, irons etc. Souvenirs of just about anywhere, you could probably make a large collection of just salt and pepper sets from Florida alone. Sets have been made in glass, china, pottery, plastic, metals and wood. You can find them almost anywhere, flea markets, yard sales, estate sales, auctions, thrift shops and antique shops.
This all reminds be of a town wide sale we went to many years ago. We were at a house that had some furniture inside so we went in to look and there were small 3 or 4″ shelves running all around the walls about 6″ apart, I mean every where down the halls and through the living room, dining room kitchen etc. pretty much floor to ceiling. So I had to ask about them, the lady said that her grandmother had passed away and collected salt and peppers. And as usual my next question was, Where are they all? She said she packed them up and were in her attic and weren’t for sale at the moment. There were over 8000 sets. Wonder what ever happened to them? So collect with caution. Stop by the shop for a few salt and peppers that we carry.
